Founders

Dr Lourdes and Dr Leslie Fernandez are the founders of Fernandez,
a pioneering initiative in 1948.

They set up Stork Home, a two-bed maternity clinic in Bogulkunta, which they nurtured into a full-fledged hospital.

Dr Lourdes Fernandez
was an excellent
Obstetrician and
Gynaecologist.

She completed her MBBS from Bombay University and DGO from Dublin, Ireland. She was admired for her medical skills and charming bedside manner. Many mothers that gave birth at Stork Home have brought their children and grandchildren back here to give birth— such was the love and loyalty she garnered.

Dr Lourdes was an inspiration both in the hospital and outside. She worked hard but also made time to enjoy the things she loved —travelling, singing, ballroom dancing, sports, and reading. She was an active learner of all things new till the very end. Dr. Lourdes passed away in her 87th year in December 2004.

Dr Leslie Fernandez, the spouse of Dr Lourdes, was a businessman. After setting up the maternity clinic with his wife, he was inspired to study and become a doctor. At the age of 40, he began his medical education and was soon serving patients as a general physician. The backbone of Fernandez Healthcare, he was a man of strength and compassion. Despite facing many hardships in his early life, he grew to be a wholesome individual, fondly called Baba by the patients and community.

Dr Leslie’s talents were not limited to his profession. He was a multifaceted man with an interest in painting and poetry. Some of his paintings can still be seen at the Fernandez Hospitals. He also contributed greatly to the cause of cancer. In 1995, Dr Leslie passed away, leaving behind a rich legacy.

Together, Dr Lourdes and Dr Leslie ran a clean, ethical practice, serving many underprivileged patients and ensuring no discrimination. At a time when babies were delivered at home, they made the clinic a safe space to birth with professionalism and care.

Since inception, the Fernandez Hospitals have helped mothers birth over 200,000 babies.

The Fernandez name is now synonymous with birthing in Telangana.

In the late 80s, Dr Leslie and Lourdes’s daughter, Dr Evita, took over the reins of the hospital. A highly skilled obstetrician herself, Dr Evita continues to carry forward the legacy of service through care and runs the hospitals with the same ethos and commitment as the founders.
