The Fernandez Foundation began as a two-bedded clinic in 1948. The founding philosophy of equitable care for all continued to guide operations with every new hospital and outpatient clinic established. In 2018, Fernanadez was officially registered as a non-profit. All our hospitals and clinics now come under the Foundation.
Bringing New Age
Thinking to Age-Old
Values
In the early 90s, we sharpened our
focus to maternal and newborn care. From then on, everything we did, and everything we continue to do, is towards improving the practices, conditions and care for mothers and babies.
Mother & Baby
The moments and days following a birth are crucial to building a healthy and lasting bond between a mother and her child. We were among the first hospitals in India to view the mother and newborn together as a super speciality. In 1996, we set up a level 3 NICU in an obstetric unit. This was to ensure that newborns were not separated from their mothers after birth.
Evidence-based Practices
All our hospitals and outpatient clinics implement standardised, evidence-based protocols that are informed by global best practices and the latest learnings. Over the last couple of decades, we have initiated and championed Midwifery, KMC and Human Milk Banking in India. We are always on the look-out for research- backed practices that can improve maternal care in the country
Team-based Approach
We deliberately replaced the star doctor system with a team-led approach to care. This ensures that every practitioner follows the same protocols and delivers consistent, continuous care for mother and child. It also protects doctors from burnout, ensuring that every mother they care for has their complete attention. Additionally, it allows the hospital to cater to volumes while keeping costs low for mothers.

Our Approach:
Collaborative Model of Care
At all Fernandez Hospitals and Clinics, we follow a collaborative model of care that leverages the expertise of both midwives and obstetricians. We promote midwifery as the first option for low-risk, healthy mothers. Our obstetricians attend to complicated pregnancies such as twins, triplets, quadruplets, and high-risk mothers.
Both options – midwifery and obstetric-care are available at every unit. Just like no two women are the same, no two births are identical. We believe both skills are complementary and together ensure safe childbirth for every woman.
